About the Project
Flower Educational Tools provides research-based screening tools that help educators identify and address diverse learning needs in their students. In under 30 minutes, teachers complete an assessment and receive instant, evidence-based strategies tailored to each child. The platform serves schools, government programs and parents across Australia, with a particular focus on reaching regional schools and underserved communities.
We came onto the project when the startup's tech lead was struggling to deliver a working product. The codebase had accumulated poor implementation choices and design patterns that were making progress difficult and the system unreliable. Our first job was to strip back what wasn't working, rationalise the data structures, and lay proper foundations the team could build on.
A key part of that stabilisation was adding our Houston admin back end, which put the founders and researchers in direct control of their own data. Rather than routing every content or data change through a developer, the people who understood the research could manage it themselves. That freed us up to focus on building out new features and improving the design.
